During the last few weeks of my pregnancy, she was there to answer any questions I had and she checked on me frequently. “We have known Louise for a few years now, she is an amazing photographer and we have done quite a few sessions with her now since the birth of our first child. When I heard that she had trained as a doula, my first thought was she would be perfect as a doula and second... maybe we should think about working with her as I was pregnant again with our now son; Billy.
We had recently relocated to Mackay for my husbands work. It was a busy and somewhat stressful time. We didn’t know anyone and while Airlie is only 1.5hr away, when you are pregnant and have an energetic toddler it can feel like a world away.
My husband and I talked it through and decided to talk to Louise and find out more. I was also hoping to try for a VBAC and having done Hypnobirthing with Donna Martin with my first pregnancy & a refresher this time around... I knew my support team was going to be really key. To add another level to the experience my mum and dad weren’t able to get to us from the UK due to Covid.
Her support in the lead up to the birth via FaceTime calls and visits was incredible. We talked for hours and ensured that any concerns/ emotions and anxiety I was feeling was out in the open and processed before the big day. I focused heavily on my Hypnobirthing throughout pregnancy as well and my husband commented several times on how calm and prepared I seemed. No doubt in my mind that Louise contributed significantly to this.
The emotional and physical support that she provided for my husband and I during the labour was invaluable. We had a great team around us at the Mater; my OB and midwife were fantastic but to have someone like Louise there was amazing.
To say Louise has found her calling is an understatement. She has a passion for what she does but an incredible ability to support, provide a calming hand and to fit into any environment at ease. She hadn’t been to the Mater hospital before or met the team but you wouldn’t have known it. She is also an amazing photographer and while taking photos isn’t her priority when it’s ‘doula time’, she said she would snap away where she could.
We were both blown away when we got our birth photos back. How she managed to provide the support she did and tell the story of our birth in such a raw and beautiful way blew my mind. I will cherish the photos forever and to be able to share them with my mum and sister in the UK was very special.
Her work doesn’t end there, while it’s inevitable that once baby is here everyone wants to visit and meet the new addition.. sometimes in all the excitement mum’s get forgotten. But not when you have a doula like Louise. She messaged/ called and visited in the weeks following our sons birth. Checking in to see how I was doing/ feeling and if there was anything I needed. When she visited she brought meals and spent time with our toddler making lactation cookies, which he loved and I certainly loved too!
If you are even considering a doula and Louise in particular, DO IT! You won’t regret it. Its a magical but challenging time in our lives as Mums and Dads and we deserve all the help we can get. ”
